2. Cookies

2.1 General information about cookies

Cookies are small text files that websites visited by users send to their terminals (usually to the browser), where they are memorised in order to be re-transmitted to the same websites at each subsequent visit via the same terminal.  Furthermore, each website mat permit the transmission of “third party” cookies, that is, those generated by websites other than the one the user is visiting (via items present in that website, such as banner, images, maps, sounds, specific links and the web pages of other domains).

Depending on their duration, cookies may be divided into session cookies (temporary cookies that are automatically deleted by the terminal at the end of the navigation session, by closing the browser), and persistent cookies (those that remain memorised on the terminal until they expire or until the user deletes them).

Cookies have a number of different purposes.  First and foremost, they are used for the transmission of the communication or to provide the service requested by the user; to be more precise, they permit the enabling and optimisation of the website’s operation, the carrying out of authentication procedures and the prevention of illegal use, and improved user navigation by, for example, maintaining the connection to reserved areas during navigation through the website’s pages, without the need to re-enter User-ID and password, and memorising specific information concerning the user (including the user’s preferences, and the type of browser and computer used).

The aforementioned cookies are called “technical” (the user’s consent is not required for their use), in that without such cookies some of the aforesaid operations could not be completed, or they would be more complicated and/or less secure.

Otherwise, if the cookies are used for other purposes, such as the analysis of the user’s behaviour and the sending of personalised promotional/advertising messages (profiling” cookies), or simply to obtain, through services provided by third parties, aggregate information about the number of users and about how they visit the website (_”analytics cookies”), the user’s consent is required.  In fact, before sending such cookies to the terminal, in accordance with applicable law (the Data Privacy Code and the Data Protection Agency’s general disposition of 8 May 2014), when a user enters the homepage or another page of the website, a banner appears in the foreground offering brief information about the use of cookies and about the gathering of consent, which the user may give by continuing to navigate through the selection of an item beneath the banner, or by closing the banner itself.

In any case, cookies may only be read or modified by the website that generated them; they cannot be used in order to obtain any data from the user’s terminal, and they cannot transmit computer viruses.    Some of the cookies’ functions may also be performed by other technologies; therefore, within the framework of the present privacy policy, the term “cookie” shall be deemed to refer to cookies and to all similar technologies.
